Hi,

I am stuck completely unable to startup. I get the windows logo with
dancing squares, then a blue screen with white writing that blinks
once, then to the black and white screen with different startup options
- none of which work. It tries to startup then hangs and tries again
and again. I tried to startup with from C drive with Norton Antivirus
but just get a beeping sound. Help! Thanks!

Jon,

I believe I've encountered the same dillema for which you speak. To get
passed this loop, do the following.

1. Insert your Windows XP CD into your disk drive.
2. Press the power button for five seconds to turn off the computer.
3. Turn the computer back on and press Enter when asked about booting from
disk.
4. Type r and press Enter.
5. Type 1 (if you only have one XP installed) and Enter
6. Type your administrator password (you probably don't have one, if this
is true you can just press Enter to move to the next step) and press Enter.
7. The command prompt, "C:\WINDOWS" should appear. Type chkdsk /r and
press Enter. This command will initiate a series of disk check tests and
should repair all your "soft" problems. It will take about an hour to run,
give or take.

Hey Christine,

I found this link to a startup disk on another foru
(http://www.startdisk.com/Web2/ubd/ubd.htm) Only problem is it doesn'
work!

I have second laptop from which I am currently working. Is there a wa
to burn a startup/repair CD for XP from this laptop? If so, is that
solution to my startup problem?

Thanks for your help.

i am having the same problem. i recently used registry mechanic choosing the
compact registry option. Then i was instructed to restart my computer which
starts always with the black screen stating that some hardware or software
may have caused this problem and if i want to start in safe mode, safe mode w
net or last good configuration. If i choose any of the safe modes then it
list some .sys files and never goes to safe mode. On the other hand if i
choose last good config or start windows normally the windows xp logo black
screen comes up. The computer screnn then just becomes black and never goes
to the desktop. Also when using the xp cd and n other occassions the
computer will just pop itself off like a ghost or poltergeist is in it. Any
suggestions or help to get me back to the desktop??????????? Pulezzz help
