Complete backup of Outlook 2007 prior to install of Win 7

K

Karl Snooks

Good People,
What files do I need to backup in order to lose absolutely nothing when I
perform an install of Office Pro 2007 on a system on which I will be
installing the "final" version of Win 7?

Present OS is Win 7 RC.

I am especially interested in maintaining my accounts, contacts, messages,
rss feeds, calender....in other words, everything.

Searches so far have yielded on results applicable to older versions of MS
Office and older OS versions.

Am especially interested and hearing from someone who is not guessing or
relying upon older documentation.

Thanks,
Karl

I have to wonder where you searched, certainly not the MS groups where the Q
is asked and answered daily
The process has not changed for at least the last 3 OL versions or since
win9*

Milly,
Thanks. I was really hoping to find a precise and full-in only one
place-list of files to be backed up and then reinstalled on the new system.

The reference which you and others have used for many moons is excellent but
not specifically and precisely dedicated to a transfer from one system to a
freshly installed Win 7 RTM and MS Office Pro 2007 system with no reference
to historically interesting info valid for much older OS and Outlook
versions.

From the info available, directly and indirectly, from the link you gave, I
am piecing together a Word document dedicated solely to the purpose of
transferring all from my present Win 7 RC and Office Pro 2007 system to a
fresh system of Win 7 RTM and Office Pro 2007.

Once again, thanks for the link.

All you really need to transfer is your data file. See
http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/backupandrestore.htm . You may also want
to transfer your autocompletion cache and your signatures, but those files are
covered in what Milly cited. Transferring your accounts is best not done,
creating them anew after the installation. If you transfer your data file
correctly, your rules should transfer as well, but I prefer to export them to
an rwz file and then import them into the new installation. Other files are
best left for recreation by Outlook and many settings won't transfer because
they're in the registry. In my opinion, it's best not to transfer the old
registry keys, either.

Crikey! All I ever have to do is to copy the .pst file to My Documents and
configure my new Outlook intsallation profile to use that one. I can't
imagine the pain of jumping through all of those hoops.

Since I use Exchange at home, I let Outlook use cached Exchange mode and get
my Exchange mailbox that way. I also prefer to configure my accounts
manually as well.

| Milly,
| After all of the research and documentation, I've decided to utilize
| products suggested by Gary Van der Molen in the WLM user group:
|
| http://www.staticbackup.com/windows-live-mail-backup/
| http://www.staticbackup.com/products.htm#swmbf
|
| Have downloaded the free versions of outlook backup and WLM backup,
| will perform the backup, burn the ISO I downloaded via TechNetPlus
| download site, and have the joys of installing and reinstalling.
|
| Thanks,
| Karl
