If any DOS (or other command prompt) command is invoked by "clicking on it"
in Explorer then IF it terminates the command window also closes -- this
obscures
any error messages, etc.
Do this -- explicity OPEN a Command prompt (Start run: Cmd -- will work.
Run Edit from there -- continue your investigation of the problem.

If he is already doing that it may be that one or more of the following
is at fault.
16-bit DOS subsystem / ntvdm
*.NT configuration files
edit.pif
OP should try starting (from cmd prompt) another 16-bit command-line
program. There might be something in the Event Logs too.
