combine audio

Im having trouble with combining 2 side by side audio clips that I had split
up prior. I rechecked the help file to see f i was doing it correctly & i
think so. I push te ctrl key and choose the 2 consequtive clips & 'combine'
is always greyed out (as well as the 'split') what can i do? i am trying
this in the timeline.

the combine would need the two clips to be next to each other on the
timeline, with no trimming of the two ends where the clips are being
combined.
