If you live near the New Forest or are willing to travel, there's a neat multiplayer party being held over the weekend 31 Jan 03 - 2 Feb 03. If you've not been to one of these LAN Parties before; you bring your PC, PS2/Cube/Box consoles, games and DVD movies to the party location where a local area network has been setup to connect everyone together.

You then play against the other people at the party. Do that already over the Net you say, why bother? Well these parties are popular because of several things you don't get playing online. Top of the list is the social party side, the event I'm recommending is located near several pubs, an excellent Indian Restaurant, and a Chinese take-away. In between gaming you drink too much beer, watch DVD films on the provided projector & big screen, and demonstrate post-curry wind control. The gaming itself is cooler because you can verbally taunt and abuse your opponents during the game and bask in the death/destruction you wreck. If you're the one getting constantly trashed then the true beauty of LANs becomes evident as you just saunter across to the best player and watch him at work - crash course in all the tricks/tactics required or what ;) If you're married/girlfriended getting away also means no interruptions whilst you party the whole weekend.

If you fancy some of all this be aware its no frills. Most bring a sleeping bag, air bed/camp bed and survival kit (incl brufen) for the little time they actually bother with sleep. Alternately there is accommodation nearby. There's loads more info in the FAQ section of www.RoWeb.co.uk, also checkout the films they've made in their previous events page which range from 30 attendees to 250+. Bigger LANs tend to be more intense gaming, cost more to take part (£70+), usually have big prizes, and are high on the geek factor. The smaller ones tend to be more relaxed, cheap (£17), and generally more enjoyable with people not so focused on winning this or that prize. If it's your first party I'd heavily recommend the latter and to go to the RoWeb party which happens about every 2 months.
