Since installing the most recent update to Windows XP home, I'm unable to
print to my HP psc950 (USB) from WordPerfect10, which goes unresponsive when
given the print instruction. No such problem with other programs, and no
problem printing from WP10 to a parallel printer on LPT1:. Corel ng no
help, although one other person there reports a similar problem. Any
insight appreciated.

Try uninstalling the recent XP update and see if that resolves the
problem. Also, have you tried removing the HP 950 drivers and
re-install?

The HP 950 is supported internally by XP. If you've used the HP
software that came with the printer, try letting XP install internal
drivers instead. The only thing that will be missing is the HP
toolbox.
