CMI error accessing sound components

I am trying the XPe evaluation edition on a Windows XP Pro sp2 system.
Apparently installed without error. I can add most components to a new
configuration without problems. However, attempts to add sound devices fail
with a CMI 0x80042335 error. Once this occurs once, attempting to add
anything else generates the same error. When this occurs, a pile of errors
are logged to the Event Log, the earliest of which often claim a device I/O
error occured on the drive holding the database. However, no error is logged
by the disk driver indicating a failure on the disk, nor do CHKDSK runs
indicate any problem with the disk. Any ideas on what is wrong?

After trying all sorts of things, I finally found that the problem was due to
a compatibility issue between the hard disk and Intel Application
Accellerator. Updating Application Accellerator to the latest version fixed
the problem.
