SP1 installation problem: CMI error

Hello all,

After playing with an evaluation version, I uninstalled all (tools, DB
and MSDE), then reinstalled a retail version I just bought some days
ago. Tools and MSDE are OK, but the DB SP1 installation aborts near
the end with the following error (reported in event log):

The CMI encountered the following error: 0x80004005 (-2147467259)
Error occurred in CMI.

Looks like despite I installed the retail tools and MSDE, the whole
still tries to connect to the old evaluation DB that I removed before.

Any similar experience ?

Config:
Win2K SP4
MDAC 2.8 SP1

Thanks,
MFLD

You have to uninstall the eval version before installing the full release.
The names for the eval and full release databases are different.

It looks like the evaluation version hasn't been completely removed from
your system. I would suggest you to first uninstall Windows XP Embedded
Tools and Database completely. Please exit all instances of XP Embedded
tools before uninstalling. Then reinstall the retail version of XP Embedded
tools and database.

Thanks,
Shweta

Thanks for the advice. So I uninstalled again all the XPE stuff, and
checked that no more directory related to XPE still exists (tools, db,
db engine).
I started to install the tools SP1 again, and now I got the following
error:

Windows XP Embedded Tools SP1 Installer Information dialog box:
Error 1904. Module C:\Program Files\Windows Embedded\bin\regxpe.dll
failed to register. HRESULT . Contact your support personnel.

I entered exactly the same key as printed on my genuine retail cd box.

Forget it. I used FileMon.exe to monitor the file access when
performing:
regsvr32.exe regxpe.dll

And I detected that the program was searching the ATL.DLL in a bad
path.
I executed regsvr32.exe ATL.DLL and the installation of the tools went
fine.

For DB engine, also had to cleanup manually the installer registry,
then reboot before installing, otherwise getting an "already
installed" message despit a full uninstall before :-(

I reinstalled all, thus following the advice given.
But it still fails on the error reported at the beginning of this
topic.
Any advice or experience, other that suggesting to re-install the
whole ?
