closing quote wrong

I switched a document to "smart" quotes. Closing quotes came out the
wrong--backward--direction. I don't want to change every quote by hand--this
is a 250 page book and there are TONS of quotes. Please help.

Are there perhaps spaces in the wrong places? Is the correct language
applied to the text?
