Smart Quotes

In Word 2003 when inserting a quote within a quote such as "' the quick brown
fox...' the left Smart Quote is curved in the wrong direction and is curved
in the direction of the right close quote mark. Anyway around this? I have
a feeling it's because Word thinks that it's closing the quote even though
it's the beginning.

You probably have the wrong language applied to the text (Tools | Language
| Set Language).

The language applied is English (US). I also noticed that this is happening
on multiple machines consistently. The Single quote appears correctly if you
put a space between the " and the ' otherwise we need to cut and paste. Any
other ideas?

I don't believe there is any way round this. Word has no knowledge of
pairing and decides whether to use a left or right smart quote depending on
whether it is preceded by a space (or certain other characters). Sorry.

Sorry, I didn't read your problem description carefully. As Tony says, this
is one of those cases where Word's best guess is incorrect. But you can
force any given single or double quote by using the built-in keyboard
shortcuts for them.

Right single quote (apostrophe) = Ctrl+', '
Right double quote = Ctrl+', "
Left single quote = Ctrl+`, `
Left double quote = Ctrl+`, "

To use these, press the Ctrl key and the apostrophe or grave accent key
together, release, and then press the accent, apostrophe, or
Shift+apostrophe (") key separately.
