When I start outlook, a screen open that says my personal contacts folder was
improperly closed and I have to wait sometimes 5-10 minuites before outlook
will open. If I try to do anything in the mean time, the computer locks up?

Thanks Ken-broach

Outlook locks; it is scanning the file then. Make sure that you properly
close Outlook and that the outlook.exe process quits before you turn of your
computer or the pst-file could get seriously damaged.

I have the same message that appears at start-up. I think I close Outlook
properly. I do wait for a minute before I close windows XP

I am having the same problem. I have been using Outlook for years and this
just started recently. Unfortunately it started on both of my computers that
I receive mail on. The problem started about the same time. Everytime I open
Outlook I get the same message that I did not close Outlook properly. Thank
you, Peter Oliver

I had the same problem. In my case, the problem was apparently cause by
backup software called Iomega Sync. I had the software set to copy my pst
file every several minutes. When I discontinued that setting, the problem
appeared to go away.

How did you discontinue the setting? Can you go step by step? I've had this
problem for quite a while and now sometimes it takes 7 or 8 minutes at start
up to check the personal folders that I closed improperly... and today, once
that was done, now I'm told my archive folder was not closed properly and
it's taking another 3 minutes to check that. Please spell out step by step
what to look for and how to fix! help!

Is it possible that one or more of the antivirus/spyware programs are holding
Outlook open and not allowing Outlook to close all folders properly? I
recently added AVG and it seems that the problem occurs every day.

My Personal folders were just fine under Outlook 2000. Now I have upgraded
to Vista and Outlook 2007, and I get this message (and the scan) every time I
start up Outlook.

I have no reason to post this here, except that maybe it will refresh this
issue and someone who knows how to fix this will reply.

TIA.

I have had this problem off-and-on for some months now using Outlook 2002 and
it is really irritating. There seems to be no solution offered by Microsoft.
Could somebody at Microsoft get on the ball and deal with this? If it is
still occuring in Vista and Outlook 2007 it is a current problem.

I just wanted to let you know how I fixed this problem. I'm running Outlook
2003 and when my .pst file reached 2gb I started getting this error message.
I couldn't use the .pst file at all as it took about 20 mins to open, and
always crashed my pc. I tried everything suggested on every page from the
internet where people had the same error message.

I eventually ran scandisk (chkdsk in XP) and it found bad clusters in the
file which it replaced, this then allowed me to run the inbox repair tool
(scanpst) to repair the file. Once this had finished (it found 18151 bad
records!) I restarted Outlook and everything is worked fine. No crashes, no
messages and I can use the file again.

Were I in your shoes, I'd make a new PST and transfer the data from the old
to the new, after which I'd specify the new as the delivery location. I'd
make sure it was a Unicode PST and not an ANSI (OL 97-2002) PST.

I'm a new Outlook user (2003) having lots of problems, including
1. icons in systray - sometimes outlook plus multiple envelopes
2. Outlook is set up to display progress when it's getting mail, but it only
does that some of the times. Sometimes I click on "Send/Recieve" and nothing
seems to happen.
2. whenever I shut down and restart Windows (every few days typically, but
more often now, with Outlook problems), when I restart Outlook, it almost
always gets a "Data file Personal Folders was not closed properly. The file
is being checked for problems." This check takes 4-5 minutes (Thinkpad T40
running XP).

My messages and folders were ported over from Outlook Express - took two
tries, because 1st time the messages had wrong dates, so I deleted them all
and followed the export/import process, which seemed to work, but none of the
messages seem to have email addresses that Outlook can recoginze (e.g. when I
open an old message that was exported/imported, and try to rt click to add
sender to contacts, that option is not there, and when I try to reply to an
exp/imp message, it populates the sender's name in the "To" field, but
doesn't recognize/know the email address. FYI, Contacts were populated via
Palm sync.

Seems like somethings not right - any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.
