thanks for your reply. its a HP LAPTOP and it fell from about waist height. I
use a lyncsys wirelss card and the card that was in there when it fell
snapped a little bit but the light still came on when i put it in. the other
card i used is exact same make. only problem is when i put either card in the
computer the lights come on but it just freezes up and nothing happens.
if you need any more info let me know.

All NIC cards have a unique MAC Address. Even though it's the same
make and model. To XP it enumerates this as a new card. You need to
remove all NIC cards and reboot. Go to Device Manager, Click View
and tic/check "Show Hidden Devices". Expand the Network controller
category and Uninstall the previous NIC. Then shutdown, re-insert the
new card and reboot.
