Clicking on file icon in Excel does not work

Hello,

I have a recent problem with the excel program in XP. Whenever I click
on the file icon nothing happens on the screen except that a gray space
shows up where the spreadsheet should appear. The word "ready" appears
where normally the words "running virus scan" occurs. The only way now I
can open excel files is to go to "open" in the top menu of the excel
program . Its a hassle then going to search for the file in the
directories to open it that way rather than just clicking on the file
icon. What could be the problem? Have I accidentally changed the
settings and preferences for Exel?

Thanks

If you do a file|Print preview, do you see your file?

If yes, then the file opened, but it's off the screen.
Window|arrange|tiled, then resizing would fix it.

or...

Sometimes one of these works when you're having trouble with double clicking on
the file in windows explorer:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

--- or ---

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

Maybe one of these will work for you.

Sounds like there is a problem with your anti-virus software and it is
interfering with your Office. Disable any "office-plugin" that the A-V
software has.
