Clicking Link in Outlook Express hangs OE or IE

John

I've got a laptop with Windows XP Media Center edition, running Outlook
Express (OE) 6 and Internet Explorer (IE) 7 - along with McAfee. All
scans show a clean system. When I open a mail message in Outlook
Express, it seems fine until I click on any link -- and OE hangs without
opening IE (which has to be the default browser for McAfee to do
updates). Once I've clicked on a link, OE stays hung until I reboot. I
can right-click on a link, copy the shortcut, and paste the URL into a
browser, and that works as expected.

It's a pain remembering to never click on a link within an email
message. Any advice would be appreciated.

thanks
John

it may be stalling with trying
to open the browser.

sometimes having ie pre-opened
can alleviate the problem you are
having.

you should double check to
ensure your i.e. is the "defaulted"
browser. go to add/remove programs
and check that i.e. is defaulted.

The hang occurs whether IE is already open or not. It does appear to
hang in Outlook Express, since the already openned IE window remains
functional. With IE already open, control eventually returns to OE, and
I can copy the link and paste it into IE manually, and it works.

Unfortunately, I must leave IE as the default browser in order for
McAfee's anti-virus updates to work, and IE is indeed the defaulted
browser.

Anyone have any other ideas?
thanks
John

Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types tab
Select "URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol" and click Advanced button
Select open and click Edit button
In "Application used to perform action" field, type:
"Path to iexplore.exe" "%1"
e.g. -
"c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe" "%1"
Uncheck "Use DDE" and click OK twice
Repeat this for "URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy"

Good Luck, Ayush.
