Clicked links pop up and then disappear-HELP

S

stanfordlynx

Please help... this was posted in another NG but nobody is home there.
Below is the post that I responded to because I'm having the links I click
in IE not stay up, they just pop-up then disappear...

I have IE 6 with XP and service pack 2 installed. When I try to click on a
link or URL from some web sites, a new window opens but the page never
loads. I tried changing the security setting with no luck.
Bat-Bubba

....I'm having the same darn problem. A small "pop-up window" come up for
just a few moments, then disappears. Sometimes I can re-click the link
several times and it will come up if I maximize it quickly, but 95% of the
time the links I click just won't stay up. I've turned off all the various
pop-up blockers --IE, Yahoo, Google, EarthLink, Charter etc. I've tried
many different settings, tried un-installing and re-installing, nothing I've
tried seems to work--so I'm having to resort to using Netscape. I've used IE
for many years and this has never occurred.

I really want to get my IE working again.

I'm using Windows XP pro sp2, 256 RAM, 1.5 ghrt _IE 6.0 sp2_

Thanks in advance.

Hi stanfordlynx :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Nothing happens when I click a link in IE

Go to Start>Run> and register the following dll's by using
regsvr32 command. Try the first 2, then see if it resolves the problem. If
not then register the rest of the .dll's:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll?
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll?
regsvr32 msxml.dll?
regsvr32 mshtml.dll?
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll?
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll?

also...

Go to Start>Run and type in regsvr32 urlmon.dll
Then click ok
Then open Internet Explorer and go to
Tools>Internet Options>Programs and
click on 'Reset Web Settings...'
Try the hyperlinks again

If that doesn't work, then check out the following article and do the
additional steps outlined
there:

You Cannot Open New Internet Explorer Window or Nothing Happens After You
Click a Link
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q281679

Hope this helps.

1. You click on a link and an IE window doesn't even open:

http://www.oehelp.com/ielnk.aspx.

2. You click on a link and an IE window opens but it doesn't load:

You Cannot Open New Internet Explorer Window or Nothing Happens After You
Click on a Link
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679
(re-register all DLLs listed in this KB article)

3. Installing the latest Cumulative Patch for IE may solve the problem as a
side-effect. Check in at Windows Update.

4. Run a thorough check for hijackware.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1

It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

A real BIG thanks to JAN and PA Bear!!

I read Jan's reply before I downloaded PA Bear's--and followed her
instructions-- but I had to remove the "?" marks after .dll.
What are the "?" marks for Jan?
After registering the .dlls and rebooting; IE is finally working correctly!
Why did this malfunction occur, what could cause this problem?
In any case THANKS SO MUCH, both of you two.

Sorry for the confusion......that's a good question, and I really don't
know. It's really a puzzlement, as they are not in the original text, I
don't see them here on my end, but, for some reason they keep getting in
there now and then when it is posted. I have not been able to figure out
why.

Say Jan--

Why does this malfunction occur, what could cause this problem, (how can
I avoid it in the future)? BTW, PA Bear just emailed me saying your fix
also made his IE function correctly again too.

In any case THANKS AGAIN SO MUCH for your very good help and your wonderful

I inadvertantly left out one (1) letter 'A' of my email, my last post should
have said: "(ex-husband to 'A' nice Jan)"

It is not an uncommon problem, and there are a variety of things that can
cause it. One good thing is to make sure of is that you clear your
Temporary Files and Cookies regularly. Follow the information here:

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

The TIF size should be set to 50-60 MB. Larger caches tend to be more prone
to trouble.
See "Resizing your Cache"

Think a smiley sunshine....:)

Jan,

Where are you getting those lines from?
(Presumably you are copying them from somewhere?)
If it is not a .txt file there may be unprintable control characters
on the end (e.g. a signal for a hard line end vs a soft line end, etc.)

In any case I imagine if you browsed that file with a hex editor
that you would find that the trailing question marks are just some
other characters which can't be represented in your news message's
character set so they are converted to ? when pasted.

If you don't have any other tools which would show you the hex value
you could always use debug.exe and its E command to paste some
copied characters and then its D command to show you their values
in hex. <eg>

You may be right. I got them from a friends website some time ago, so there
may be something there that I can't see and only shows up once it is posted
to the newsgroup. I'll try checking as you suggest and see if there might be
something hidden there. I have retyped them from scratch and hopefully that
will end the problem, but, I would like to know what it is thats doing that
in case it should happen with something else at some point.

Thank you very much for the detailed information, I really do appreciate it.

Jan and PA Bear; I'd like ask again --what do you think causes this
problem? I'd like to avoid it in the future, it was a huge problem.
Thanks once more,
Stan
