Clearing History / MRU list ?

This is a good one.

We have a user complaining that he cannot clear his IE history.
However, the problem is not really with his IE history, but rahter something
else kept in his user proflie. It happens when you go to the IE/Windows
Explorer address bar, press backspace to clear everything, and click
down-arrow. It happens on any machine we tried (including my home PC). The
addresses in the list have a strange format. For example:
//support.microsoft.com
lab.rdp

No matter what we, we cannot overcome this behavior. Note that the IE
history is gone. What we've done:
1. We logged in as local admin and deleted the History folder - no go.
2. Changed the group policy setting to disable the MRU list. - no go.
3. Disalbed the autocomplete for Webaddresses (wchich is the only thing that
"fixes" the problem, but then the user cannot use the autocomplete), rebooted
the PC, and re-enalbed the autocomplete - same problem

Looks like this is behavior is by design. Any help would be highly appreciated

Personally, I hate Append Completion, AutoComplete In File Dialog and
AutoSuggest.

To remove an AutoComplete entry from a Web form, highlight the item in the
AutoComplete dropdown and press the Delete key.

To remove all Web form AutoComplete entries, go to the Internet Explorer
Tools menu, select Internet Options, Content, AutoComplete, then press the
"Clear Forms" button.

Clear Forms button
[[Click this to clear your History folder of all entries you've previously
made in Web pages. This ensures that nobody else can use your computer and
attempt to view any private information you've previously entered, by
viewing what entries are listed by AutoComplete.]]

From IE Help...

To delete Autocomplete entries from the Address bar list

[[The AutoComplete feature saves previous entries you've made for Web
addresses, forms, and passwords. To delete entries from the Address bar, you
must clear your History folder. You cannot clear individual entries from the
list of saved entries.

1. On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
2. Click the General tab.
3. Under History, click Clear History.

Notes
When typing information in Web forms, and typing passwords, you can remove
an item from the list of suggestions by clicking the item and then pressing
the DELETE key. ]]

Thanks for your suggestion, but we are not trying to clear the forms. You can
try it yourself. Go to the IE or Windows Explorer addressbar, do a backspace
to clear what's in there (eg, about:blank), and hit down arrow. And, no,
clearing the forms does not guarantee privacy.

Anyone? MVPs? Developers? Mr. Gates?
