clean install xp upgrade

Yes! The only thing needed is an original Windows 98, 2000 or ME install CD
so that the Upgrade can find the required file needed to see if you qualify
for the Upgrade.

I am not sure if Windows 95 or NT 4 CD would work.

That is kind of an oxymoron, clean install and up grade. A clean install is
a complete personal data backup then a total disk reformat in preparation
for an XP installation. An upgrade (as you write) is to take your existing
OS ME, 2000, WIN98 and over right it with an upgrade version of XP. To do a
clean install you need the full version of XP.

No, you can clean install with the upgrade CD. You will just need to
put the install (not restore) CD of the original OS in the drive when
asked.
