"Class not Registered" error

Dear experts,

I have a new toshiba Laptop (Qosmio g35-av660; 2 gig ram, 2ghz, xp media
ed., sp2)

Two days ago I began (for the first time on this computer) importing pics
and video into Movie Maker 2. All was well and good.

Then for no reason that I can identify, I could no longer import video (or
audio) files. It gave the "Class not Registered" error

At first I thought it was the file itself (i.e. I needed a new codec or it
just wasn't compatible). However I tried importing the exact same file on a
different computer into MM2...and it worked fine!

Now, I have thought carefully about what I did that evening that may have
interfered.

-I installed gspot codec identifier
-I installed Free RAM XP
-I watched some video using Intervideo WinDVD
-I plugged my laptop into a TV to show those videos to some friends

That was about it.

Once I realized that it was ALL video files that would not import I started
working backwords.

-So Uninstalled "freeRAM XP" and "Gspot" just in case.
-Then I used system Restore to go back one day
-I searched the fourms for problem codecs and then renamed and/or removed them
-I then deleted Intervideo WinDVD and WinDVD Creator
-I updated my Direct X
-I checked Hardware accelaration
-I ran the "qdv.dll" (and another one that was suggested)

I tried every possibly relevent suggestion on the various forums...BUT still
no importing of files.

I am working on a wireless home network. I have 3 computers all online. The
other 2 work fine. No issues with MM2 so it was not a virus.

PLEASE help! I am pulling out my hair here. What could possibly done this???
Can I re-install some MM2 files???

Desperately waiting for an answer....

Just a thought...have you installed WinAVI?

It is very frustrating when it happens. However in all cases it can be
resolved by re-registering the system DLLs.

The things that is missing in your checklist are:
1. Install/reinstall Windows Media Encoder 9
2. Update Video drivers.

Also see if those same video files actually run in the Windows Media
PLayer at all?
