CHM files won't open

S

Silvabod

Have XP Home pre-installed with SP2 and all later updates, (with a
"recovery" disk, not a full system disk).

PROBLEM - cannot open CHM documents "unable to display" window.

Searched on MS Knowledgebase - says the Help file is missing or corrupt,
"re-install missing file from System disk. Then I saw the article was for
W95, W98, ME - not XP.

Which file is it that I need to replace ? found various Help and Winhelp
files, but which one is it that handles CHM ? Or is there a different
solution for XP?

System is fully protected and free of malware/viruses.

start/run, type:
MSCONFIG
There is an Expand File button to help you replace the 'HH.exe'. You need
access to the location of your original media setup files.

Did you download the .CHM file from the web perhaps? If so, right-click on the file, choose "Properties", click "Unblock" and click OK.

Mark, though the immediate problem is solved ("unblocked" did it) please see
later post re Scannow" function - cannot do this, see post timed 14.10).
Thanks!

OEM systems are pretty hopeless about repairing anything. I would say use
NTBackUp instead if you had the Pro edition, but you have Home. One less than
perfect solution might be to use the "FAST" wizard.

Save settings and data with the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard (FAST
wizard): Go To: http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm

This would assume you also saved all the install files for anything
additional to the ironicly mis-named 'system recovery'.

Not quite sure about this. Whilst I could indeed use F A S T to save my
settings, not sure what would be acheived. As stated, don't have a full
System Disk, so can't do clean install of XP anyway, and since the existing
settings already include one which erroneously prompts for XP-Pro/XP disk,
what's the point of saving that setting? Restoring from, F A S T would just
restore me to the same error state, would it not?

Unsure also about last comment about ""install" files for anything
additional to System Restore".

What I DO have is a series of "Norton Ghost" backups on remote hdd, over
some months - in theory I COULD restore from there - if only I knew WHICH
files to restore! What is the registry key prompting for the XPPro disk -
would it not be simpler to edit that to its correct state?

I have no idea at what point the "XPPro" got introduced. PC/OS is
approaching 3 years old, I keep it as clean and tidy/protected as possible.
Have only ever done two "restorations" in all that time. Just beginning to
run into the odd glitch - nothing fatal, just inconvenient.

As Wesley was saying, you would have to locate the appropriate folder that
exists to restore files from. If that setup cd for the recovery to defaults
fails to show an i386 folder, I'm quite sure SFC is a tool you are not going
to get acces to. You would have no appropriate place to point the registry
entry.

As you stated, you have a preinstalled Home _With_ SP2 'slipstreamed' into
the setup files. There is going to be no 'servicepackfiles' folder for you.

As for the Fast utility, it only restores the user hive, and would not touch
the sfc entry. Ghost is your best option for any repair you need, without
'starting over clean'. Good Luck.
