Hello,

i am running win xp and for the last month upon restart it has been doing
the 'check for consistency', finishes, on the screen is the windows xp
logo..windows starting message and then it goes back to the 'check for
consistency, etc'..i have to hit a key to stop this. i did chkdsk at the
command prompt and it tells me to repair..i have tried the lang chkdsk c:
/f and the msg "volume is in use by another process" no matter how many
times i do it??
what am i doing wrong to correc the system file..

thank you

Why don't you leave it for a few hours while it repairs the disk
and stop stopping it, sounds like you have bad sectors and it is
moving data about. The best time to do it is just before you go
to bed the same as defrag turn the computer on and goto bed

Failing that if you haven't formated your disk in NTFS put a
win98 boot disk in and run chkdsk from there you can not
check a disk while running windows XP

I’m having a similar problem after upgrading a notebook from 98-XP. After an
initial successful boot into XP, a reboot constantly repeats CHKDSK “for
consistency†despite claims to have fixed the errors, never fully booting
back into XP. I can’t even get into Safe Mode or Use Last known Config
without this happening.

Before the otherwise uneventful upgrade I CHKDSK for errors (none), malware
& defragmented the HD.

I’ve never heard of a startup of CHKDSK taking hours as you mentioned or it
repeating itself over & again as we report?

I guess I’ll be calling MSFT tomorrow unless I can find the answer online.
Any clarifications would be greatly appreciated…

i do let it run, but it gives me the results, continues to the winxp logo
and then goes back to the same screen to 'check for consistency'..etc...
Question: why will it not allow the chkdsk c: /f command to run?? I have
run it in the c: prompt mode and i know there is a file system error, but
cannot figure out how to fix...i am not completely computer illiterate, but
stumped here..plz advise ifyou can.. thank you

Hi Diane B, I have let this problem of endless CHKDSK "for consistency" run
its course as well as stopping it when the cycle doesn’t end as described
previously.

I will be calling MSFT tomorrow (although in the context of 98-XP upgrade
the result may help you too) & post a reply but if anyone knows anything
about this problem, I’d also be enormously interested. Let us know if you
discover anything in the interim & I shall reciprocate asap. Best Wishes,

My CHKDSK loop problem that was preventing me from booting into XP was
resolved today by using F8->Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure, had
to use XP CD to boot then Recovery console to rename a problem .sys file to
..old. Have to also give props to a nice guy in India who works for MSFT. –
Best Wishes
