chkdsk will not complete

Hi,
I am trying to run a chkdsk and it completes upto 4 of 5 and when it gets to
5 of 5 (verifying free space) it stays at 0%

It can take a very long time to move at stage 5 especially if you have a
large HDD.

It seems that there is problem in your hard drive.Visit manufacturer's
website and download,install hard drive diagnostic tool to assess the
condition of it.It's a good idea to back up your data.You may have to
replace the drive.

it's only a 40GB HDD, other computers with a 40GB HDD does it in around 5
mins

Since you seem to be running a Chkdsk with repair qualifiers a
couple of questions come to mind. First, how much free space
is on the drive/partition ? Also is the drive recently defragmented ?

When it (Chkdsk) reaches Phase 4, does the HD LED on the
front panel of the PC illuminate & stay lit ?

Do you use any type of non-native recovery software like GoBack?

I am having the same problem, when it reach stage 4, its just stay there and
will not move, seem its freeze or just hang there, is there a fix on this
issue?

thanks ssg, it was a faulty HDD, why didn't I think of running the hard
drive diagnostic tools, maybe because it didn't freeze or blue screen on me.
