chkdsk stuck at 0 percent completed

didds

running chkdsk on xp media (fujitsu-siemens laptop) - nees to run at
reboot etc ... selected fix errors etc

Restart laptop and chkdsk starts... verifiying files (stage 1 of 5)
completes easily, but stage 2 (verifying indexes) is stuck at 0%
completed... nothing appears to be ahppening at all.

Thoughts?

Is it just this hard drive on the way out?

probably need to
borrow a windows
cd and boot with
it.

then log into the
recovery console
in order to access
the disk.

then at the disk
prompt you can
run the chkdsk.

i would also run
a fixboot too, since
it may have crashed
trying to initialize
the other chkdsk.

you might want
to double check
the homesite for
your laptop and
see if they have
any built in techniques
to launch the recovery
console. if not,
then use someone's
cd - any winxp cd.

keep in mind that
chkdsk should be
run regularly to ensure
that the master file
table reconciles with
the file system.

if you decided to run
chkdsk initially because
you encountered some
errors or issues, then
it may be due to the mft
and files created with a
corrupted mft may also
be corrupted.

but for the most part
if the corrupted file
system occurred because
of a bad file, then it will
be the only casualty.

In xp,go to run, type:cmd In cmd type:CHKDSK C: See if it completes the
chk,its only "read only" & no repairs are done.If it completes, type:CHKDSK
C: /F
Agree to restart, type:EXIT Restart pc.If it failed, install xp cd,exit the
menu page,
in cmd type:Sfc /Scannow When its thru,remove cd,type:CHKDSK C: /F See
if it works on restart.
