Chkdsk Trouble

ZOMG, PLZ HLP MEH!

A few days ago I got an error message, saying that one of my files was
corrupt, and that I needed to run chkdsk. I've tried to do so, both
manually, with the "cmd" in the Run dialogue box, and on the booting up.
When I try to restart my computer, I get the message that the drive cannot be
accessed. My C: drive, where everything is, is not an FAT32 or FAT drive,
it's one of those NFTS or whatevers.

The only solution I've been able to find (and it doesn't work!) is to
install Windows Service Pack 2. I already HAVE WSP2, and I'm lost as to what
to do. Please help me. I don't know what's happening, but my entire
Downloads file for the Sims 2 magically disappeared, and I'm very upset.
Before I start to re-download and fix it, though, I want to run chkdsk.

Anything, anything at all, will be helpful.

A coherent post from you would be a nice start

I thought that was coherent enough, but I guess not. Help me, give me
suggestions, what can I do to make Chkdsk run correctly to fix all the crud
that got mucked up?

Start from the beginning.

What EXACTLY is the problem?

When did it start?

What did you do that made it start?

What have you done to try to fix it?

What EXACTLY is the problem?
My computer is malfunctioning. It is randomly deleting files, and generally throwing fits. When I try to open programs that require disks, such as The Sims 2 or other games, I get an error that that file does not exist.

When did it start?
Two days ago. I hadn't been doing anything out-of-the-ordinary, just surfing the web and whatnot, and a little popup came up in the lower right corner, saying that something was corrupted, you need to run Chkdsk.

What did you do that made it start?
Nothing that I'm aware of. I'm completely unsure, actually.

What have you done to try to fix it?
I have tried running chkdsk, only to have it tell me it can't do so when something is accessing the drive.

I have tried running chkdsk on startup, only to tell me that it is unable to
access the drive.

I have looked for solutions to the above problems, but the only solution I
have been able to find was to install Windows Service Pack 2, which I already
have.

I have tried starting my computer in SafeMode, (so that I could run Chkdsk)
to no avail, because it decided to randomly freeze on me, with a black
screen, with filenames or something written all over it in white lettering.

I have a Compaq, and it's really a piece of crap, because there isn't a way
to start it in SafeMode manually, nothing happens when you hit F8, it
completely ignores the command. In fact, the only two things that come up on
the "Compaq" load screen is F1 for setup (and there's really nothing there),
and F10 for disk recovery, which I don't want to do because I'm afraid it'll
kill something.

It will restore your disk to the same condition it was in when you
first turned it on.

Given your present problems, and the fact that you probably don't have
an XP disk, you may not have any other options.

I can assume that you've not kept any backups of your system to use in
such a circumstance as this, right?

I *thought* we had an XP disk, but I can't seem to find it at the moment.
I'll ask my family if they've seen it.

Also, my mom has five "back-up disks" but I'm not really sure what's on
them...

So this is the only way? By the way, thanks for the help. :D

You probably don't have one since there is an option during bootup to
select a restoration.

some visual styles - like those in windows blinds - can prevent chkdsk being
run at startup. if you have them applied try removing them and running chkdsk
again.
if you still have no success then borrow an install cd from a friend.
boot the cd and select Repair at the first screen... run chkdsk /R from the
command prompt. if this is unsuccessful then email me at (e-mail address removed)
and i will snail mail you a repair cd and clear instructions on how to fix
your error.

forget uncle grumpy. i understood your first post clearly.

This is going to sound really stupid, but what's Windows blinds? Also, I
found what my mom said was the "Windows XP" disk, I guess it's a bootlegged
copy, that's like five disks long (which I really don't understand). I'm
sort of hesitant to use it, but if I have no other choice, I will.

Is there something like "Goback" installed? Or perhaps ZoneAlarm? Those
two programs can also interfere with chkdsk. As to the 5 CD set, it's
likely that they are the "Compaq restore CD's" that you can create from
the hidden partition on the hard drive to put every thing back to square
one.

I don't have anything like Goback or ZoneAlarm on my computer, so I don't
think the problem is there. I found out what those "five disks" do,
apparently, and they are indeed to restore the computer from the
Day-We-Bought-It configuration. I wonder if it would work to try typing the
chkdsk /R into the screen that shows up when that disk is in? Basically, it
asks if I want to run restore, tells me that everything will be deleted, and
then asks me yes or no.

And I would restore the computer, but my sister got all upset because all of
her pictures would have to go away, and my brother was upset for his music
loss. Myself, well I already lost my Sims stuff, so as far as I'm concerned,
there's nothing worse that could happen to it.

My mom has a friend at work that usually fixes our computer when it gets
broken, do you think he'll be able to fix it for us? My sister also threw a
fit about how I was only eighteen, and I didn't know "that much about
computers", so "how was I going to know what was wrong and how to fix it?"

Guh, at wits end here.

If your moms friend usually fixes it, perhaps that would be the safer
avenue, especially without the proper CD to do a repair at this point.

Oh goodness, I figured out how to run SafeMode, (which was the result of
tapping the F8 key very quickly before anything loads), but it freezes still.
I think I'm getting closer, but not sure.
