Chkdsk safe mode and recovery console

What a pickle, does anybody know the answers to this. I can not get chkdsk to run, says cannot open volume for direct access as the machine boots. I cannot boot into safe mode, I get a long listing of drvs way too many to copy down, then machine does nothing. I cannot get to the recovery console if I try the machine refuses to load windows to protect its integrity.
