CHKDSK mistery

R

Roberto Totaro

Hello everyone.

I've recently re-installed Windows XP from scratch and run
into a strange and annoying problem: CHKDSK no longer
works.

If I want to perform a disk check and I select
the "Automatically fix file system errors" box, I am told
that a CHKDSK will be performed at the next restart.
However, this does not happen.

If I look at the registry, I can see that
the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Se
ssion Manager\BootExecute" registry value contains the
proper entry ("autocheck autochk /p \??\C") but AUTOCHK is
never invoked at startup neither the line is removed from
the registry value.

The only way to check the C: disk is to boot from the
Windows XP CD-ROM and get into the recovery console.
However this is far from being convenient.

Does anyone have a clue about what can cause this
behaviour? A quick google search seems to indicate that
most people have got the OPPOSITE problem, that is CHKDSK
running at every restart. This anomaly seems to be
relatively rare.

Thanks very much for your help!

Have you installed ZoneAlarm 5? It's a known problem with it.

i had the same problem. i would schedule a check disk and then restart but it wouldn't check disk. i started having this problem when i upgraded to zone alarm 5. now that i have uninstalled it, check disk now work. i did a search and found lots of people saying that zone alarm can cause this and i guess it does.
