chkdsk /f on external HD

Pat

Gentlemen,

Two bits of advice please.

I have a corrupted file on its own in a folder on my Maxtor 120Gig external
HD.
How do I delete it? Trying to delete the folder produces an error message
that it can't be deleted as it is not empty. Trying to delete the file hangs
for a few minutes then stops. No error message.

Defragmenter reports that the drive is corrupt, says that I should run
chkdsk /f, and quits.

chkdsk /f runs on C with no problems. How do I tell it to run on my external
drive, which is G?

TIA

chkdsk g: /f

Often you can delete a file from the Command Line when it will not go away
from within the Win GUI. Try a Command Prompt, then Safe Mode Command
Prompt if the first doesn't work.

It is entirely possible the ext drive is corrupt beyond chkdsk's capability
to recover it -- especially if it is a single partition and/or had physical
damage. Aftermarket recovery tools like Symantec/Norton Disk Doctor may
help. You may want to temporarily copy the good data to your internal HD
and/or DVD, then repartition and reformat, and restore the data. If there
is any other indication of physical damage, replace the drive.
