Chkdsk Error

Hi
I'm trying to run Chkdsk /f from the command prompt and
get the error "The type of system is NTFS. Cannot lock
current drive.""Chkdsk canot run because the volume is
in use by another process. Would you like to schedule
this to run at start up?"
I do this and each time go back in and run chkdsk to see
if its fixed and its not and again and tells me I've got
errors. I can't run defrag as it complains that chkdsk is
scheduled to run. I also cant fix with Norton Utilities.
It stalls out right after Stage 1 and says ... File
verification completed. Then says about 10 lines of
Deleting orphan file record segments (all with diff
segment numbers) .. Then says Errors found. CHKDSK cannot
continue in read-only mode. Am I stuck in an endless
loop?
Pleeeeese help

I'm not clear on one thing in your post: are you rebooting and
letting chkdsk do it's thing, are are you just answering "Yes" to the
prompt about the volume being locked, then trying to run chkdsk again?

If you aren't rebooting, chkdsk isn't running as intended.
