Chkdsk Continues to Find Errors

RE: Xp Can't Repair Disc Error (JamesJ)
I started a new thread because I'm getting the
same error from chkdsk on a new as I was on the old.
I had a 40gb that had errors in the volume according to
Recovery Console/chkdsk /p. I then use the chkdsk /r and
it appears to fix the error(s).
Had new 160gb hd installed. Same problem. Recovery Console
can not eliminate the errors in the volume.
The only thing I could think of at this time is that the tech who
installed the new hd copied the data from the old to new and somehow
brought the errors with it to the 160gb. I've scanned for viruses with
AVG free edition and it found none.
I've tried several shareware utilities and I'm getting to the point now
where
wiping every last bit off the new hd and reinstalling xp. But then again I
did that with my 40gb and it didn't work.
I will entertain just about any other suggestions someone might have.

Thanks,
James

I get this error if I connect "any" hard drive up to an Adaptec ATA-133 PCI
controller card. Connect the drive up to an IDE port on the M/B and the
drive checks OK.

How are your drives connected?

Have you checked the hard drive manufacturer's website for any disk checking utilities? I have used
the WD diagnostics tool in the past for my drives, it can check the drive itself for errors and if
there is a bad spot on the drive it will try and fix it.

If CHKDSK is still reporting errors on your hard drive, then:

1) Hard drive data ribbon cable may be bed/defective/loose. Check and
replace if necessary.

2) Make sure that your XP is running at least with Service Pack 1. Service
Pack 1 had the large hard drive "patch" (hard drives greater that 137GB)
installed into it. Service Pack 2 has everything that Service Pack 1 had,
plus more.

3) Make sure that you are running the UltraDMA drivers for the hard drive
access. This is a special driver which would allow XP to correctly access the
hard drive at the enhanced access speeds.

4) If all the above have been done, locate and download the hard drive
enhanced diagnostic utility (found on the hard drive manufacturer's web site.)
This should check the hard drive for any problems. Beware: This test could
erase the hard drive and make any data that you want to keep "lost." If the
diagnostic passes, then you may have a software problem with XP. A complete
re-format/re-install should fix it. If the diagnostic fails, the hard
drive is defective and you should replace it, either under its warranty (if
available) or buy a new one.)

Bad cable or a bad controller. Unfortunately, that's on the MB, if
that's the problem you'll need a new board.

I've seen chkdsk find errors time after time on a known good HD.

The machine that had that problem had flakey RAM.

By clocking it down a bit the problem was "solved".

The partitioning tool originally mentioned was fdisk. You never indicated
which version 64 or 132GB version limit.
Fdisk, either version, cannot account for 160GB of binary space. It wraps
either in accounting the space, or making a partition, then trying to
account for space. The only thing you can do with it is make a max sized
partition for the version of fdisk you're using. You should be able to make
3 minimum with the former, and 2 minimum with the latter version.

An older cloning software may be the culprit. Since you said you had the
old hard drive 40GB copied to the 160GB hard drive.

I suggest you use NTFS option in partitioning in the XP installation setup
since you're starting from scratch anyway. Wipe the current partition(s)
first.

Please explain clocking down.

Yes I have and I've ran the utility that I downloaded
from the Seagate website.

The opposite of OVERclocking, usually called UNDERclocking, or lowering
the frequency that the sysem runs at. You will find it in the BIOS if
your motherboard supports it.

J

JamesJ

I'm assuming you mean the CPU speed in the bios.
Right now it's set at 1300 (forgot the last two digits)
and the other three values are over 1500.. up to around
1700. This is a 1.5gb machine.
Am I undrstanding you?

Not sure of the version of fdisk. I believe it came on the WinMe disk
I haven't used but copied to a floppy.
I was having the same problem on the 40GB.
This is a NTFS.
Will XP wipe the partitions or should I use fdisk??

What is UltraDMA drivers?
Currently the driver for the hd is provided by Microsoft:
Version 5.1.2600.2180(xpsp_sp2.rtm) 040803-2158.
I hope I copied properly.

1.5 gb? Is that the amount of RAM installed? If you mean to say 1.5 Ghz
that is a CPU frequency, but it is achieved by the motherboard frequency
times a multiplier for the particular CPU. If you have 1300 or something
and the CPU is 1500 then I think perhaps you have an AMD processor. But
I am only trying to explain the meaning of UNDERclocking. You will
need to read the motherboard manual to determine what frequencies you
may adjust.
