CHKDSK report

I just ran CHKDSK/R to try to deal with what appeared to be bad sectors on
my 6-year-old hard drive (WinXP SP3). When it finished running, I had the
following message: The system has recovered from a serious error. A log of
the error has been created.

I clicked to get more information and saw an error signature of BCC Code
with numbers following it, BCP1 and numbers, etc. (I printed the screen, so
I have all the letters and numbers if that's of any value.) I clicked on the
link to view technical information and got to this:

C:\DOCUME~1\JO-ANN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERa205.dir00\Mini082009-01.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\JO-ANN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERa205.dir00\sysdata.xml

I'd be very grateful if someone could tell me what this means. I ran CHKDSK
because I had gotten the blue screen of death (see earlier post) and
couldn't back up my hard drive with Acronis True Image, which reported bad
sectors.

The hard drive is dying. You can confirm this by running a diagnostic
utility. Either get one from the drive mftr. or you can use Seagate's
SeaTools For DOS. But probably you are just going to have to replace the
drive. Six years old is elderly for a hard drive.

Thank you, Malke! I'm going to try to back up the drive again with Acronis,
now that it's "fixed," and then I'll replace it (or have the local shop do
it; I'm not terribly confident about my skills with hardware).

In your earlier post it was determined that your hard drive was failing. You
said that you have a good Acronis image to restore from. Does it matter
exactly how the drive is failing? Just restore the image when the new drive
arrives and you'll be done.

I hadn't thought about doing that, DL. Thank you! I'll start the second one
now. I always validate my Acronis backups. I haven't, however, ever restored
one...

I just wanted to make sure that drive failure was indeed the issue. Now that
I know it is, I'll get another drive. Thank you!

Get a much bigger drive they are so cheap now.

I'd love to, but first I have to figure out if my computer will accept a
larger drive. I have a vague memory of some older computers being limited to
around 120GB or maybe less...

Maybe what you are remembering is the XP limit of 137GB that SP1
corrected. However, if your computer is quite old, that limit could
also be BIOS related. You might look and see if there is a BIOS
update that you can apply if that's the case.

There is a Seagate 80GB IDE for $37 here.

Be aware that IDE drives won't be offered forever. It is possible
that production has stopped, and what you're seeing at retail
is the remainder of inventory. (I was warned about waning supply,
by my local retailer.) So if you have an IDE computer, you
might consider buying a couple drives and put one away for a
rainy day (test it of course, then put it away).

If five years from now, you need an IDE, then you'll be looking for
a SATA drive to IDE host adapter. I bought one of these a couple weeks
ago, and the only thing I don't like about it, is it can be a bit
difficult to disconnect the motherboard IDE cable, from the 40 pin
header on the small PCB. This comes with the necessary power cable,
and some products don't include the power cable.

Thank you! I've now been told that a 160GB drive should work, so I'll go
ahead with it.

Thank you for the warning, Paul! I suspect my old computer won't last all
that long. (It's the longest I've held onto a computer since I started
buying them--in 1986.) I'm hoping to keep it going until I decide what I
want next.
