The first icon in control panel is an Ace of diamonds card
icon wich a bunch of chinese writing.

What might this be and how do I remove it?

Hi!

Have you looked into ADD / Remove Programs if there are any programs you dont recognise?

Nothing in Add/Remove Programs out of the ordinary.

The text reminds me of chinese, but it's more like odd ASCII text, such as capital A's with two dots on the top of them, greater than symbols with superscript numbers like to the 2 or 3 power.

In looking at the properties for this Ace of Diamonds Icon it's path is to an executable file in the Winnt directory\ Close.exe and the file close.exe does not exist on hard drive when having all files shown.

In certain situations when you right click the last or next to last choice will be this ASCII text for that Ace of Diamonds icon. Cannot remember off hand exactly what I'm doing when this comes up as a right click choice.

Am unable to do a copy and paste of the ASCII text.

When you try to execute the icon it comes back unable to execute close.exe.

How does one safely remove an icon from the Control Panel or to remove a line item from a pop up menu?

Run Panda Titanium AV on it and it's updated 7x24 as machine is on 7x24.

You mean *non-ASCII* text. ASCII text is the ordinary Latin letters,
numbers, and punctuation like those used in this message.

It's not clear where you're seeing these properties. The entries in the
Control Panel are all derived from .CPL files in \WINNT\system32. Do a
search for *.cpl in that folder and see if you find anything peculiar. If
so, delete it to the Recycle Bin and reboot. If the strange icon does not
appear, that was the culprit.

This may be a component of some malware, so it's a good idea to run your
anti-virus scanner, AdAware, and possibly one of the Browser Helper Object
diagnostics.
