I have a child domain, x.y.com and a parent domain y.com

If the network connection between the single domain
controller in x.y.com and the parent domain, y.com, is
broken whilst a user in the child domain is logged onto
x.y.com, will they be disconnected from the network
immediately?

By disconnected you mean able to access resources etc then yes. If you mean
screen goes black and they no longer able to do anything then no. They will
lose anything during the existing login that must travel accross the
disconnected network. They will not however be able to log back in should
they get logged off until the connection to the domain controller gets
relinked.
