Check disk hanging at start up

I have had a message at start up saying that
one of my discs needs checking, but the check just stops at 7% complete.
I've been ignoring it for a week or so, but now the whole thing has gone
belly up.

There is no doubt. The hard drive is in trouble.

Put in a new drive. Reinstall all, put in the old drive in secoind position, try to recove data by 'taking ownership'
