I have a new harddisk. I have formatted it. I wonder if it's better
to do a check disk as well in case there are problems with the disk.
Would the formatting step have handle all the errors that could have
been picked up by check disk ? Thanks.

If you did a "regular" format (as opposed to a quick format) the disk
was scanned for bad sectors during the format process. As a matter of
fact this scanning for bad sector is the reason it takes so much time to
do "regular" formats.
