Chararcter Map not working

OS WInXP Prof.

character map has worked fine till now. no idea why. i send the error
report, but there is no additional info provided as how to fix the error.
clicking on character map desktop shortcut produces this popup message:
"character map has encountered a problem and needs to close. please tell
microsoft about this problem. we have created an error report...."

i've rebooted several times, but the error dosn't change. i don't find
anything that would help in the help and troubleshooting on this puter.

anyone know how to fix the problem?
note: i was given this laptop with the xp os installed, but did not include
the os cd, so no help there. unless i can use the character map on my 98se
os cd and reinstall from that without changing the other options for the
character map included in xp?

thanks

No 98se will not work. You might try MSCONFIG and the "Expand File" button.
Borrow an XP setup cd. You want ..i386/.../charmap.ex_ put in as
%windir%/system32/charmap.exe

There is also a possibility you have a hidden partition with it on there. I
would try running 'SFC /SCANNOW' to look for it. 'DiskMgmt.msc' will detect
partitions.

ok, looked in laptop OS files under %windir%/system32/charmap.exe.
this file *is* there on the puter.
since it's there, why would it not work?

didn't borrow an xp os cd, tho. try that later.

tried the 'SFC /SCANNOW' , but since no disc, it kept on telling me that the
cd was needed for "files that are required for windows to run properly must
be copied to the dll cache. insert your win xp pro dc now."

tried the 'DiskMgmt.msc' . there is no partition. only the dark blue
shows. no other colors.

other than borrowing an xp pro cd to reinstall the charmap, anything else
can do?

My guess would be that you might have a corrupt Font file that charmap is set
to open. Even then, you would need SFC or an extraction to replace that, too.
