Changing to new HDD in Laptop

Hi,
I want to install a new HDD in my laptop, an IBM T-20 ThinkPad, because it
will run quieter and also have more space. The laptop is over 2.5 years old
now, and it's a good upgrade. I'm also having a glitch where the software
may have been infected by a worm or virus. So I want to back up my data, and
reinstall Windows 2000 but on a new HDD. My technician warns however that we
need something like a new key code or else Windows 2000 may see the new HDD
as a new computer, and may shut down in 30 days because of the "install and
use one copy of the SOFTWARE on a single computer" rule. So the big question
is how do people normally install new hard drives, or how do we get around
this issue? Do I need to purchase a new copy of Windows 2000? It appears
the software version is OEM, loaded by a prior technician. IBM says they
originally shipped my laptop with Win98, so I don't think they can be
helpful. What do I do? Thanks!

Changing the hard disk only won't affect your Win2000 licence.

Hire another technician, ask him to clone the disks and keep the old one for
a while as a backup, then destroy the content. Read EULA.
