Changing the Start Orb

Andy

Hi. Does anyone know how to change the start orb (bottom Left Hand on the
taskbar) to a start button like the one in Win98 or XP?

Thanks,

Andy.

No, other than to change the entire Theme to Windows Classic.

Just asking out of curiosity, if you know what the Orb does,
and you do, why is making it a Start Button so appealing?

Right click the Desktop and select Personalization. Click Themes in the next
window. In the drop down menu, select Windows Classic. Apply/OK.

Familiarity with earlier additions! ...... Because I like it .......
because I want to!

It would be a boring world if we were all the same! :)

Thanks I didn't want to go that far. I want the theme of Vista but just put
traditional Start button (either win98 or xp style) where the orb is or
change the orb to a button with 'Menu' written on it.

Thanks I knew about that but I don't want to change the whole theme and the
whole taskbar to classic just wanted the start button instead of the orb
symbol. - I dare say its a matter of time soon some developer brings out a
true looking windows xp theme for windows vista! :)

I wouldn't hold your breath...
I can't imagine more than a handful would
have such a request on their wishlist.

I don't know, I am not a developer but I should imagine someone who can
write themes for windows could knock one up pretty easily. I think it would
be good for people who have been using the interface/appearance of Winxp for
years and that have liked it and to use it on their new vista PC for a while
and then later on change back to the vista theme if they wish to do so.

If its a case where you think there would not be no usefulness of a windows
xp them on vista why is there a built in classic theme in the vista OS?

I have seen a Vista laptop on which the 'Start Orb' was a human
face (possibly the husband of the young woman using the
computer). So, it has been done.

Once one finds and identifies the specific image, it could be
replaced with an image of the same type with the same name.
Though I'm a newbie to Vista, I imagine there is a repository
somewhere of all the system images...

As far as I can see the Theme in Windows XP is called luna.msstyles so if I
copied that and any other associated graphics off the windows xp disc would
that not create the windows xp theme on the vista I wonder?

OK, your heading for trouble.

If you are sure you really want to do this, you need to dive into it and
learn where all of the many pitfalls are. If you are looking for something
that is free, this also means that whatever way you choose to do this, there
probably will not be any support if things go wrong.

Take a look at the following website to get started.

Thanks that's exactly what I was looking for but 2 hours later I still cant
get it to look like XP after downloading the files from that site so I must
be doing something wrong. Its showing up as windows xp Theme in the themes
setting but the look its giving me it just a classic theme. Maybe its
because I only have Win Vista Home Basic maybe it needs the aero theme in
Vista premium to work properly. I might have another bash and if not contact
shifty102.

Hello Andy,

You can either change the theme to one of the windows classic themes or you
will have to resort to using one of the themes (.msstyle themes) available
on the internet after patching your uxtheme.dll, shsvcs.dll and themeui.dll
files. Patching files is not completely legal according to Microsoft's terms
but you can do that if you really want to get rid of the orb.
