Vista Update Breaks Start Menu?

P

Programatix

Hi,

I have Vista Ultimate installed on 2 machines with latest updates via
Windows Update. Both are having problem with the Start Menu about 1 week
ago. If I click any application in the Start Menu (the one that appear if
the Orb is clicked), some applications do not start. Currently the list is
as below
1) All Microsoft Office applications
2) All CorelDraw X3 applications
3) Perfect Disk 8

The same happen if I run them by typing the application name in the Search
Bar.

Anyway, I am able to start the applications if I click on the Orb->All
Programs and followed by the required applications.

Can anyone out there confirm this?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I may suggest that this happened since this applications has difficult
"shortcuts". So I may suggest try create shortcuts to this
applications himself.

Also I recommend to try - Vista Start Menu

If it makes you feel any better, I can confirm that those programs aren't
starting on your system.

Yes it did.
About a week ago some small icons in the Start menu (to the left from
program names) stopped being displayed correctly on my computer. It was
corrected a few days later by following update.
Now I am back to the same situation. I restored system back to the May 10
point hoping that it would remove a new Windows Mail problem (it did not).
Some icons in Start menu are blurred again now.

Same exact problem here... MS Apps and now AutoCAD LT Apps don't load from
the "recently opened programs" listing.

So, anyone with solution?

No solution but I do have a workaround... First right click the shortcut in
the start menu (recently opened programs list) and click "remove from this
list". Then manually create the shortcut on your desktop (or presumably
somewhere else) with the Target field pointed at the executable. Launch the
program from the new link which will re-add the shortcut to the recently
opened programs list. As long as the manually created shortcut remains then
the one in the start menu should work.

Actually, revise the second part to create the shortcut in a folder (create a
shortcut folder somwher) then right click the created shortcut and click "pin
to the start menu". The other way works but only if you leave the shortcuts

In my case the program that "broke" the start menu was Handy Backup by
Novosoft. I read somewhere else that another 3rd party backup software did
the same thing.

By the way did you run shell view as an administrator (right click the
program and run as administrator)?

This worked for me. A program called Media Center by JRiver was causing the
conflict. I disabled this shell extension using the program cited by Reiper
and my start menu items now open.

Thanks Reiper!

Ok found the problem. It's Ray Adam ATI Tools. It does not appear in the
Shell View application. That is why I still have problem when I disabled
everything. I tried uninstalling each application I've installed.

Thanks for the info.

Ok, found the program that did this. It's ATI Tray Tool. The problem is, it
is not listed by the program recommended by you.

Thank you for your information. Without it, I wouldn't have solve this
problem.
