Changing the name of an Icon

I changed the name of several Icons on my desktop, which under Windows XP
prof never was a problem, but with Vista these programs do not start up
properly anymore. Is this correct?
 
If the icons were for shortcuts, it shouldn't matter. If they were actual
files, it could. More info needed.
