Changing Resolutions Problem

Hello all,

I own a Nvidia Geforce 2 Ti card, a Mitsibishi-Electronics DV159 LCD monitor
and use Windows XP.

Here is my problem:
In Windows XP, I use the 1024x768 (32bit) 75Hz resolution, and it works
perfectly. However, whenever I want to change it to 800x600 (32bit) 75Hz (or
play a game that only supports, say, 640x480 resolution), I get an "out of
range" error on my monitor.

However, upon reinstalling the Nvidia drivers, and restarting my comp, this
"out of range" error is solved temporarily (i.e. I *can* now change to
800x600,640x480 75hz resolution).

Now, I say temporarily, because after another restart, I would get the "out
of range" error again. And this can only be solved by reinstalling the
drivers yet again, and restarting.

Here is my question, how can I solve this problem permanently? I know that
my LCD supports 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768 75Hz resolutions just fine, so
that's not a problem.

Thanks in advance,
Aaron

Have you tried using Compatibility Mode on the game? Take a look in Help
and Support for information about Compatibility. You basically just
right-click the link you use to launch the game, select Properties and then
go to the Compatibility tab. On there, you can choose to run that game only
in 640x480 screen resolution.

best advice I can give you is get ahold of n-vida as it sounds like you might have a bad card or just a conflict between the card and your widows platform.

The drivers are NOT remembering the refresh rates you set.
Find out exactly what refresh rates you screen supports at given resolutions
and use something such as ReForce to fix the refresh rates.

DUH! He is using an LCD screen. LCD screens don't have a refresh rate,
because they don't work like CRT monitors, so they are set up to accept a
refresh rate of 60 as default, although a number of them will accept pretty
much anything you feed them.

Best bet is to set all refresh rates to 'optimal', 'default' or 60.

OMG, thanks everyone for their responses. I finally found out what was
causing it!! I had enabled "double scan for lower resolutions", thinking it
did something good... Anyway, stupid me!

Yikes Aaron! Were you checking the option again
each time you reinstalled the drivers (for those reading
that's in Advanced Display Properties / Display Timing
/ GeForce Tab), or was it retaining the setting?

It seems really strange. I think it resetted it for the first time I
restarted, then retained it for subsequent times... Strange indeed! (i.e. I
did not manually go and check it myself every single time)

It must have save the preference file or registry key.
I've added your experience to my bag 'o tricks. ;-)
Thanks for the update and your post Aaron.
