Changing ICS Host

J

JoeA

I use ICS on my home network (running XP Pro on all
computers). I recently purchased a newer, more powerful
machine and intend to use the new machine as the ICS host
making the current host a client. Is there a recommended
sequence/procedure to make this change?
I'm running Zone Alarm Pro as the 3rd party firewall but
that change seems fairly staight forward.

OK. Thanks. I wasn't sure if I'd see a decrease in
performance. I would make life simpler adding teh new
machine as a client.

Indeed you would.

Should you decide for other reasons to make the switch, Windows caches
addressing and DNS information, making the switch-over difficult but not
impossible. Merely un-doing ICS on one machine and setting it up on the
other (following the destructions on the link I gave) often doesn't do
the trick. More information about static IP client configurations using
ICS is covered here:

Also keep in mind that switches and routers also have internal address
tables and to force them to re-learn and re-build their address tables
requires power-cycling them after you make the configuration changes to
the PCs.

You seem happy using the Internet Crap Sharing software. That's odd;
most people hate it. If you are on broadband and can afford an
inexpensive router (since you are buying a new computer I think you
can probably afford the $50 for this), dump ICS and get a cable/dsl
router. It's easier, more reliable and you don't have to have the
host on for a client to access the net.

I see you're a big fan of ICS. I'm connected via
satellite. My two modems have a USB connection to my host
computer which run the satellite connection SW. Hence, my
need to use ICS.

I did a little investigation and plan on upgrading to the
new generation modem (send, receive, and SW in one unit)
which will connect through my hub eliminating the need to
use ICS.
