changing headings

I'm trying to change the headings in a document so it is similar the
following:
1 heading
1.1 heaing
2 heading
2.1 heading
2.1.1 heading
Appendix A title
Appendix B
20.1 title

I need both the section titles and the appendix titles in the table of
contents with tje page numbers and since some of the documents I will be
creating are rather large. Up to 9 sections and up to 20 appendices. I do not
want to enter the table of contents by hand.

Does anyone haave a good suggestion on how to do this without seperating the
appendices from the main document?
