changing computer to original settings

I just got my computer on Monday. A free 90 dayMcAfee security came installed
on it. When I activated it , I was not able to get my home page or any web
sites to come up even though I was connected to web. I called my server
(Earthlink) and they said that McAfee Security was blocking me from browsing.
I installed Norton Antivirus and now able to get web sites to open. I can't
get the McAfee uninstalled and am having trouble sending email . What would
happen if I did a system restore to the first restore point , and did not
activate McAfee, and then in installed Norton Antivirus. I read some where
that there is a way to get your computer to the originall setting. Any help
greatly appreciated.

you need to check and see if you have the most recent service pack 2
on your machine, most likely you do, the problem is due to a conflict
with software firewalls, if mcafee security also has a firewall, you can't
have both of them turned on, disable the windows built in firewall, and see
if that helps.
do this, click on start, then control panel, then find the icon that says
firewall
doubleclick on it, and select the off button, select ok, and see if that
helps.

Hi ... Before installing a different Anti Virus program make sure you have
totally remove the old Anti Virus program first , or else you will probably
get more problems later on .... Try to uninstall Mcafee in safe mode and
afterward from windows explorer ... Then when you are sure that its totally
been deleted , then install your new anti virus program .... Its not good to
have 2 different anti virus programs , it can cause many problems later on
..... If you still can't remove mcafee from safe mode try going to there
tech website and ask how to remove there program .....

.....besides the other advice I would not pick Norton over McAfee.

Bear in mind that NAV does NOT protect you agaist all hacker and spyware.
You MUST have a firewall if you are usi a boradband connection.

I suggest that you make a new Restore point just in case the following gives
trouble then
1) open NAV and turn of email scanning for outward email
2)go to your Windows firewall and make sure it is enabled . If you have SP2
go to the advanced tab and enable any particular exceptions needed.
3)Boot in Safe mode and try uninstalling mcAffee from Control Panel\Add &
Remove Programs. If this will not work while still in safe mode go to your
Program Files folder and delete the McAfee security folders.

Reboot in Normal mode. if you do not like the Windows native firewall
install a proprietary one, eg Norton Security or Zone Alarm.

If uninstall Norton, there are 4 programs listed for Norton on the add or
remove programs. Live Reg, Live Update, Norton Internet Security, and Norton
WMI Update.
In what order do I unstall them? I know in the past when I have uninstalled
programs that have more than 1 listed, if I haven't uninstalled them in the
correct order, there is a message that says that to remove the program
listed you have to uninstall something else first. What order should I
uninstall them?
Thanks

For NIS 2005 Symantec says to uninstall Norton Internet Security (in
normal mode, not safe mode) and makes no mention of the other items, so
it is probably safe to presume that it will remove the other components
at the same time. If it doesn't you can probably remove them indivudually.

If you have a Norton program with a year subscription ?
Then i would just remove the mcafee off your system and
use the Norton one ... Are you not able to remove or
uninstall mcafee in safe mode ? To be totally honest both
Mcafee and Norton SUCKS ... I would never use either of
them .... Here a very good antivirus program in the future

And this is a real firewall that i doubt if anyone would
say other wise

I think this is one of the most dangerous pieces of advice you
frequently see. That's because it implies that the opposite is
true--that if you have a dialup connection instead of a broadband
connection, you don't need a firewall.

In fact, it doesn't matter what kind of connection you have.
Everyone who uses the internet should have a firewall. If you go
on the internet without a firewall, you are at severe risk. As a
single example, it can take only a few seconds of connection
without a firewall to get infected with a worm like Blaster or
Sasser.

Since you just got the computer, you should restore it to the original
shipped state using the Recovery procedures the OEM provides with the
computer.
This will give you the opportunity to start clean and this time when you
setup the McAfee, pay close attention to the setup wizard. You missed some
essential steps in the setup, as there is nothing inherently wrong with the
software.
