change widescreen to square format for Powerpoint slideshow

I am creating powerpoint presentations on an HP laptop with a widescreen
display. When I project the slides, they appear distorted and "squashed" to a
square format. Any suggestions as to how I can correct this? Is there
something I can do with my laptop, or is the problem in the projection system
(whose specs I don't have on hand)?
