I am using a wide screen laptop. My powerpoint presentations always look
fine on the computer, but when I switch to the presentation screen (i.e. in a
classroom), Powerpoint is not adapting to the fact that I have a widescreen.
The slideshow presentation is not centred and the right hand side of the
slide ends up being cut off. Does anyone know how I can adust for this? I
would be sincerely greatful for any help. Thank you.

I am using a wide screen laptop. My powerpoint presentations always look
fine on the computer, but when I switch to the presentation screen (i.e. in a
classroom), Powerpoint is not adapting to the fact that I have a widescreen.

PowerPoint only adapts to the video display information Windows hands it.
On the widescreen laptop, it's being told that the available video is x by y
pixels, where x/y is considerably larger than the usual 4/3 ratio.

With the usual setup (mirroring external video from the internal video) you're
sending the same number of pixels out to the projector, which may not be able to
cope.

Or it adjusts itself but makes the image bigger and it's just falling off the
edge of the screen. W/o seeing it it's hard to say.

For starters, try setting your laptop's display to 1024x768 and see if that
works better with the projector.
