Change in how I.E. handles downloads

Before I updated to the new XP service pack when I would download it would
prompt me and ask if I would like to open or save the file. Now when I
download it automatically opens it to a temp file with no option to save
before opening. How can I fix this?

Hi,
I'm not sure that the update changed this (but I could be wrong.) But
anyway... you have to set this option for each file type.

From Ctrl Panel> Folder options then File Types. Select [file type]>
Advanced.
Put a check by "Confirm open after download."
You should then get the "Open or Save" dialog for each download.

Hi -- I'm actually having the exact same problem, and I changed settings as
recommended in replies to this post, but I'm still having the problem.

Specifically, I have a list of links that lead directly to .wav files. When
I was using Office 2K, I would paste a link, which looks like this:

http://www.X.com/sounds/Y.wav

into the address field at the top of IE, and click Enter (or Go).
Immediately I'd be prompted to either open or download. I want these files
to download always -- I almost never open them directly. (This is not an ftp
site, so this is always how I get files from this location.)

Now, even after changing the file type settings as posted here, the same
thing happens:

1. I paste the link in address field
2. I can see at the bottom that the file is downloading
3. It opens with Quicktime, with no prompt to save to file. (I've tried
changing the file association for .wav files to another program, such as
Winamp, but it makes no difference. It just opens with Winamp instead.)

What do I do?

Thanks so much,

How did you "change the file association" to winamp?

BTW that doesn't look like the suggestions the OP was given
for the more general problem which was asked and answered
before your "Me too!"

I don't know anything about Quicktime but if you don't want to completely
disassociate the .WAV extension from all programs you could try associating
it with Window Media Player 10 (WMP10) instead.

If it was opening in WMP10 you could then disassociate .wav files
from it using that app's Tools, Options, File Types tab (e.g. uncheck
the item "Windows Audio File (.wav)").
