cdrom wont reflect new disk

My moms cd rom is holding on to a disk that is not loaded. When you view my
computer, the cdrom icon and title reflects a microsoft works install disk
regardless of there being a disk in the drive or not. Other disks will
operate normally if they are put in but this is preventing her from burning
cds using windows build in drag and drop. When she puts in a blank disk she
can't open it up to drag files because it says there is no disk. They are
brand new blanks so it's not the media. We have tried putting in the
microsoft works cd and then right clicking the drive to hit eject but it
doesn't make any difference.

Any suggestions on how to get the drive to reset itself or something? (yes,
I have rebooted)

Click on Start button > Run. Type in "eventvwr" (no quotes) and hit enter.
In the Events Viewer left hand pane click System. In the right hand pane
look for error events. You can read them and see if the system is logging an
error for the drive.

I agree with the previous reply that the drive may be failing.
