CD Writer Testing

I need to test my CD Writer for faults, am looking for a proggy to bench
test it and report on problems and their possible causes.

The problem is it won't damn well write, one piece of software after
failing gave a report which included a line which suggested "cd lens may
be dirty".
If anyone knows how to safely clean the writer I'd be grateful for this
info too.

On the left panel, look for CD RW Section...pretty good stuff.
