Good cd writer

M

mike

Some time ago I formatted and reinstalled my computer, because it was such
a mess, and now I'm gradually acquiring progs as I need them.

Now I need a CD writer, and I wondered what the current best choice is.

I've used deepburner, burnatonce, CDXP?? and a load of others which were,'t
kosher, or didn't work.

IIRC burnatonce is a bit sparse for muppets? I like enough of a GUI to feel
comfy?

Anyhow, any suggestions, please; they seem to change so quickly my memory
of what's what may be faulty, and I don't want to mess up my new clean
puter too quickly :)

Get DVD burner instead. LG 4167B is working OK...

A quick round-up.

* Burrrn, http://www.burrrn.net/, OSS
For audio CDs only: dead-easy, efficient, versatile, multilingual,
non-intrusive. Supports "wav, mp3, mpc, ogg, aac, mp4, ape, flac, ofr,
wv, tta, m3u, pls and fpl playlists and cue sheets". Loveable app.

* DeepBurner
Reliable, light, quick. No Video DVDs. Has a limitation I find annoying:
you can only add files within a folder, not directly to the root
directory. Ugly GUI.

* CDBurnerXP Pro
Maybe the most complete solution. The upcoming version requires .NET.
Many people here like it a lot. I personally don't like and don't use
it. Ugly GUI.

* burnatonce, and
* cdrtfe, http://www.cdrtfe.de.vu/, OSS
Two frontends for cdrtools (the collection of tools by Jörg Schilling).
Both have clean, minimal GUIs. Very good solutions if you only burn CDs
(both data and audio CDs). DVD support is a bit tricky in both, as they
use the ProDVD engine (by Jörg Schilling again), which requires a free
renewable key to work. burnatonce development seems almost dead.

* ImgBurn
Robust, bugless tool, to burn DVD images (made, e.g., with DVD Shrink).
Very easy to use, very actively developed (by the author of DVD Decrypter).

Thank you, Demetris, now I've yet another to think about.

I always found burnatonce reliable, but felt it gets uncomfortably close to
command lines and consoles, which make me come out in a rash. I didn't know
about it's background.
But the cdrtfe prog seems to have more pictures, (muppet freindly) so I
think I'll give it a try.

I wanted to confirm CDburnerXP was still a good one, so I can fall back on
it if needed.

I'm certainly not into DVDs yet, but need more than just audio.

So thanks again :)

Further to my last post, Ive now d/led cdrtfe, and it appears to be
excellent.

I had a lot of trouble with getting the right files, and putting them in
the right folders, but having got it working and used it (once!) to burn a
data CD of assorted folders and files, backing up my Noteworthy Composer
installation CD, plus recent upgrades, I'm very pleased with it.

It's got all the facilities *I* want, plus verify, and drag and drop from
explorer (I couldn't see that written down, but with a real dogs dinner of
folders and files to burn I thought I'd try it; and it worked!).

So thanks again

I agree!

I have just purchased my first DVD burner and tested it out tonight. It's
the LG GSA4167BRL (Retail boxed version -- includes the writer, IDE cable,
audio cable, fixing screws and software). Have a look round for the cheapest
supplier. I bought mine from Ebuyer over the xmas period ... they were the
cheapest I could find.

It was a piece of cake to physically install and it works like a dream and
so fast compared to my old Plextor 16/10/40A CD writer and this is on a
Pentium III 450 CPU with 128 MB RAM!

I am really pleased with my purchase.

For those that are interested .... it took about thirteen minutes to burn
nearly a full (4.2 GB to be precise) DVD+RW at 4x speed. It would have taken
about an hour or just over to burn the same amount of data to CD-RW from
what I can recall.

Honestly, invest in a DVD writer ... it's well worth it and for thirty quid
or just over, it's well worth the investment in time saving alone!

Ian Edmont.

I'm glad you liked cdrtfe, Mike. Sorry about the installation hassle. I
checked a few weeks ago and there was an installer for version 1.1 that
included all necessary files and did everything for you automatically.
(I'm certain there was, because I downloaded and it is in my hard drive
now.) It seems to have disappeared. Let's hope it will reappear, so that
this nice package is accessible to more people.

btw, cdrtfe is a recent discovery for me too. I first learned about
cdrtfe here at acf, in a post by Koni.

I sort of boobed, Ian and Man wai.

I meant software, not hardware.

I'm not into DVDs just yet, CD's are big enough for me, but when I upgrade
I'll remember LG.

Thanks for the contribution - it may help someone else.

AS you can see from my post above, I've been through the pain.

You need to d/l cdrtools-2.01-bin-win32.rar (at least thats the package
that worked for me) from

http://home.arcor.de/kerberos002/cdrtfe/index_en.html

Then get cdrtfe 1.1 from

http://home.arcor.de/kerberos002/cdrtfe/download_en.html.

Unzip and copy the .exe and .dll into the folder where you've put the
tools.

Unless you speak German, unzip the lang.zip and put the lang.ini file in
there too.

Also get cygwin1.dll_1.5.14.rar from the first link, unzip the .dll and
put it in the same folder.

(No, I *don't* know why! the program just kept shouting at me till I did.
Yes, you'd think they would, wouldn't you?).

I think now you're good to go, unless I've misrememberd something.

It's in the Readme's, when you've found them.

It's a bit like getting Timidity++ to work, tricky, but nowhere near as
tough as Linux, and so far seems well worth it. :~)

Actually, although I sound a bit ungrateful, it *is* freeware, some clever
sod's worked hard to develop and provide it, the instructions *are* there,
I shouldn't moan at putting a bit of effort in.

I expect they withdrew the installation file, because if it was a bit buggy
it can cause the developers no end of grief dealing with the screams and
demands for refunds.

I guess it may have been a bit buggy, and they were up to their necks in
outraged emails, and couldn't get on with the project!
