Shut the computer offf at night it was working fine, I went to boot it up the
next morning and i got the messageand my cdroms were not recognized, either
of them. At first the light immediatelty came on the original cd rom and
kept running and refused to shut off and froze the puter where windows would
not run. thinking it might be the cable we changed the cable and got the
same result and same message on boot. So we took it all apart thouroly
cleaned everything, checked all the cards to see if they were loose and
checked the mother baord for any leaking or expanding capacitors(nothing).
Booted the machine again and got the same thing once again. So we replaced
the cd rom drive with one we know worked and rebooted. This time the message
came up again bout not being recognized but the light did not run constanly
on the cd rom. We are now at the point where we removed the the two cd rom
from bios temporaliy to bipass so we could load windows and access are
computer. Everything is working fine except as normal still have no cd rom
drives. Any other solutions or possible causes that would cause the computer
not to recognize the drives.

We have a dell dimmension 4600 win xp , 1 cd/wr and one dvd/wr its jsut over
a year and half old and is well maintained.

Ok, perhaps you need to specify the actual make and model of the optical
drives..?
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html Free diagnostic tool should
help to ID the drives, you can save info to a .txt file and cut & paste as it
relates or you see fit to your post, your call..

When you say CD/wr and DVD/wr it lead me to believe w=write r=read or
devices that record to and read media..
If both optical drives are DVD-ROM, CD-ROM drives, then in the first link,
both drives value data should be set or seen as 3.. If they are seen as 3 and
are indeed recordable devices try setting both to 2, read the instructions,
experiment, or not, your call..

Thanks, sorry it didn't work.. Are there any errors or yellow (!) in device
manager or related errors in the event veiwer..? Type Eventvwr.msc in the run
box, check application and System logs.. Are the drives showing in the BIOS
and set to auto detect..?
Post your results..

Hi, did what you suggested and there is no information to be found anywhere
about the drives they just are readable in any fashion, so i can't paste the
information. I have since contacted dell and we have followed there
recommendations. Which were to disconnect the drives from the motherboard and
reboot we did that and got the same errror which was not suppose to happen!
Then we tried connecting one at at a time back to the mother board and still
the same thing after each reboot. I do know the dvd rom is a sony dvd+wr+r
8.5gb, the cd rom came with the dell.
