cd-rw/dvd-rom not recognizing any cds/dvds

My toshiba laptop does not recognize and cds or dvds, i cannot write to
cd-r's it spins the disk but thats as far as it gets.
if i click on the drive it says nothing is in the drive

Hi Joe

I had the exact same problem with a friends laptop, does the drive show up
in device manager?

right click my on my computer and left click properties
click hardware then device manager.

look to see if there ant red or yellow flags next to the device.

One more thing you can try,
look at the lazer, does it look a bit 'cloudy'?
get a cotton bud, and some tape head cleaning fluid (ethenol) dip the bud
into it and very gently role the cotton bud around on top of the lazer.

This will be better than any cd/dvd cleaner you will buy in the shops.
if this does not work, it sounds like you will need to replace a faulty rom
drive.
